The Great Academies, Masters and Students

A SERIES OF CONCERTS CURATED BY ANTONIO CAGGIANO

Autumn season - October/December

Riprende la rassegna The concert season Le grandi Accademie, i maestri e gli allievi, scheduled up to December 2025, aiming to celebrate the exceptional link between musical tradition and emerging talent, starts again on October 25th. Every single concert offers the opportunity to listen to performances that mix the past and the present, the consolidated mastery and the energy of young musicians, for a rich and engaging musical experience.

Crossover

music by Tadini, Arango Prada

23 and 24 October masterclass  and Seminars

This concert explores the boundary line that has always animated the artistic practice of musicians, composers and performers, tracing a musical journey through all the genres listened to, played, analysed and composed. Stripped of the weight of their contrast, sacred and secular, high and popular culture meet in an internal space more important than the very definition of opposites. The same spirit is also reflected in the idea of teaching composition. Openness to different aesthetics and dialogue with all languages make the pedagogy of composition a two-way process, a give and take, without which it would be meaningless to talk about authentic transmission. An exchange in which the relationship between teacher and student becomes a mobile and permeable boundary, where the experience of the teacher is placed at the service of new aesthetics and evolving musical personality.

22 NOVEMBER, 7.30 PM
Manuel Zurria  | Paolo Ravaglia
2+

music by Tom Johnson, Riccardo Nova, Horacio Vaggione, Mattew Shlomowitz, Juste Janulyte, Emanuele Casale

Music today presents itself as a multisensory language, layered on increasingly complex levels that cross the river of our perceptions. “2+” is an ambitious project (and a game at the same time…) in which Paolo Ravaglia and Manuel Zurria, companions in forty-year experimental forays, exhibit an expanded use of electronics as an added value (specifically, the plus) that, as an appendix to the two performers, filters, develops, distorts, reveals and imagines a new, dystopian, reality in progress.

Local academies, teachers and students

Orchestra SMS della Scuola di Musica Sinfonia, Lucca | Filarmonica “Giacomo Puccini” APS – Segromigno in Monte | Accademia della Musica Francesco Geminiani, Altopascio

music by  Lou Reed, Rick Wright, Third Ear Band and others to be announced

An event dedicated to the celebration of the musical communities active in Tuscany, with a particular focus on the province of Lucca. This concert was born from the desire to enhance those spaces where musical culture germinates every day; local associations, choirs, and music schools. On stage, teachers and students give voice and soul to a project that highlights the educational and formative role of local musical institutions, not simply for playing but building cultural bridges; every note is a seed of awareness, every harmony a step towards a more mature community. An authentic musical experience, where past, present and future meet under the banner of passion and artistic education.

“The idea of a boundary line — imagined, but not too imaginary — has always been present in my way of making, understanding and listening to music. “Not too imaginary” means that it refers to all the musical genres I've actually frequented; listened to and played, analysed and composed. From sacred to secular, high culture to popular, from… to… , extremes that, perhaps, today have lost the weight I once felt, and which, in the past perhaps, I feared a little. Today, dialogue prevails, rather than the definition of opposites. Walking along the edge of this line is an exercise in balance that continues to challenge and animate me.

Even in the very idea of teaching composition, if I think about it, I imagine a similar line. Openness to different aesthetics and dialogue with all languages make the pedagogy of composition a two-way process; an exchange, a give and take, without which it would be meaningless to talk about authentic transmission. The boundary between teacher and student should be mobile and permeable, without feeling like custodians of some truth. Rather, it is about offering all the experience you have, putting it at the service of new aesthetics and musical personalities waiting to develop.”

Masterclass

Inhabited by Sound –Space
Michele Tadini and Daniel Arango Prada

Sound propagates in space, it couldn't exist without it. Imagining placing or moving sound in space is somewhat of a contradiction in terms. Sound should already exist in space; it cannot do so without it. Naturally, virtual spaces created in mixing or in spatialisation exist, but in this case the research on sound and music production aims to explore how to "inhabit space", whether in production or performance. Through analysis of synthesis algorithms, performance patches and musical examples, we will try to demonstrate some of the details, simple in themselves, that become key points of a specific conception of sound, music and composition.

-
24 oCTOBER,  3.00 5.30 PM
Seminar

Working the Sound Space
Michele Tadini and Daniel Arango Prada

A theoretical/practical seminar on the technologies used during the concert. In particular, special attention will be given to the Max 9 and Max for Live patches from Ableton Live 12 (electronic productions and real-time improvisation work).

His music is published by SZ SUGAR.

Daniel Arango-Prada Born in Colombia in 1987, Daniel Arango-Prada currently lives in France, where he devotes his time as a composer between instrumental and electroacoustic music and to music to accompany imagery.  His creations are the result of an intense sound exploration and often take shape through close collaboration with numerous ensembles and performers. These recurring exchanges with musicians allow him to deepen his knowledge and understanding of instruments. Consequently, he aims to achieve a high level of virtuosity in his works. This virtuosity can be heard, for example, in the piece, "Dune", which earned him First Prize at the Geneva International Music Competition in 2019, as well as the Audience Prize and the Young Audience Prize. Rhythm and the search for new sonic textures are also essential components of his musical language.

Virginia Vignera Obtained the Level II Academic Diploma in Chamber Music and Harp in 2022 with top marks and honours. She honed her skills at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana where she earned a Master of Advanced Studies in Music Performance in May 2023. She continues to perform concerts in Lugano, collaborating regularly with Ensemble900. Her participation in the Festival Internazionale Trame Sonore in Mantua and at the 47th season of Musica in Villa Cagnola in 2024 are noteworthy. She is the winner of several awards; First Prize in chamber music at the 2022 Danubia Talents Liszt International Music Competition with her Trio Interludes for flute, viola and harp. She was judged suitable for auditions for orchestras such as EUYO and the Orchestra Giovanile Ferruccio Busoni. She has collaborated with numerous orchestras including the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, the RomaTre Orchestra, and has played for prestigious institutions such as Nuova Consonanza, IUC, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Solisti Aquilani, and the Rome Chamber Music Festival.

Dashow, M. Lupone, M. di Bari, M. Cardi, G. Giuliano, L. Zielinska, H. Howe, and D. Mazurowski who have dedicated more than 170 works to him. He has been playing for over forty years with the Quartetto di Sassofoni Accademia with which he has recorded for Nuova Era, Dynamic and Rai Trade. He has performed with important soloists such as L. Castellani, A. Caiello, B. Canino, M. Damerini, A. Tallini, and F. Giomi in prestigious venues and festivals including the Mozarteum in Salzburg, NYCEMF-New York City Electronic Music Festival, La Biennale di Venezia, C.N.S.M.D. di Parigi, Guggenheim Museum in New York, Auditorium Parco della Musica, EMUFEST, Artescienza, Nuova Consonanza, Tempo Reale, and Milano Suona Contemporanea.

Antonio Caggiano studied percussion at the Conservatorio dell’Aquila and composition at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Roma. In 1987, together with Gianluca Ruggeri, he founded the Ensemble Ars Ludi, with which he has taken part in numerous prominent national and international programmes and festivals, collaborating with some of the most important contemporary composers, including L. Andriessen, G. Battistelli, S. Bussotti, A. Curran, W. Duckworth, JacobTV, A. Pärt, S. Reich and V. Volker-Heyn. In 2022, the Ars Ludi Ensemble was awarded Silver Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale Musica. He is an industrious timpanist and percussionist at Italy's principal opera-symphonic institutions, collaborating with internationally renowned conductors such as L. Bernstein, G. Sinopoli, L. Maazel, D. Gatti, W. Sawallisch and Myung-Whun Chung. As a soloist, he has worked closely with many composers, including G. Battistelli, G. Bryars, M. Ceccarelli, L. De Pablo, F. Filotei, JacobTV, M. Lupone, A. Nottoli, N. Sani, and M. Pagliei, who have dedicated new works to him, significantly contributing to the expansion of the repertoire for percussion instruments. He is regularly invited to collaborate as a soloist by prestigious ensembles and is currently a teacher of percussion instruments at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Roma. He combines his concert activity with composing for theatre and dance and frequently collaborating with visual artists. He has taught courses and seminars at internationally important institutions, including the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and many academies in Europa and abroad. He has recorded for major record labels, including RCA, EMI, Edipan, Lovely Music (USA), Stradivarius and Deutsche Grammophon, in collaboration with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
