“A participatory project on the construction of masks, aimed at a group of adolescents.
Chosen for their particular transitionary age, adolescents, just out of full childhood but not yet entered into adulthood, represent the link with a living memory of the imaginative world of childhood and the tension towards the rationality of adulthood. Together with them, in this phase of rapid transformation, which passes through moments that are not linear and filled with conflicting emotions, I would like to address the theme of death, observed secularly as a “passage” to another state of life.
After a first phase of research on the different ways of ritualising death, I would like to analyse the many traditions associated with funeral rites and the construction of masks that accompany the transition rituals: the “journey of the dead”. We will analyse the various types of traditional masks associated with the funeral rituals of some regions of Italy and also some other countries of the world. Having acquired a general view of funeral masks, we will work on the construction of masks that will be worn in the creation of our own personalised ritual. Our masks will represent the cultural references of each participant, reflecting the tastes and interests of the boys and girls. At the same time, they will contain the memories of their own ancestors and all the people they intend to remember.
When the masks are finished, there will be a performance with all the participants. The audio visual content collected during the classes by the artist Daniele Spanò will be played as part of a video installation.”
Just outside the walls of the Tenuta, the Cucina Dello Scompiglio, will be open before and after all the events held at SPE for aperitif, snacks, lunch and dinner, to be enjoyed both inside and outside.
